Title writing guide
2026 Etsy listing title guide: write clear titles buyers can scan
A listing title should quickly tell a buyer what the item is and which objective details make it distinct. This guide is for sellers who need a repeatable title-writing process—not a promise of rankings.

What this page is for
Use this guide when you are revising one listing title or building a title from scratch. Its job is different from keyword research: start with a real product fact, then choose the clearest way to name it.
Etsy’s current guidance asks sellers to state the item, bring the most important traits forward, keep titles scannable, and avoid repeated or subjective wording. Etsy also says search considers a listing holistically, so the title does not need to carry every possible phrase.
A simple title order
Start with the product noun. Add up to three facts that would change a buyer’s decision: material, colour, size, format, personalisation, or a defining construction detail. Add an occasion only when it is essential to what the item is.
- [Primary descriptor] + [item] + [material / format] + [key differentiator]
- Put the most useful words first because that is what a shopper sees first on a small screen.
- Use commas or a dash only to improve reading; do not use separators to disguise a word list.
How to choose the details
Ask: if a buyer opened two similar results, which verifiable detail would help them choose? For a ring, it might be stone and metal. For a digital printable, it might be file type and size. For a personalised item, it might be the personalisation itself.
Move secondary uses, gifting language, delivery information, and subjective claims to the description or relevant tags when appropriate. Never add a trait the product does not have.
Worked example: personalised recipe book
Before
Personalized Recipe Book, Custom Cookbook, Gift for Mom, Bridal Shower Gift, Kitchen Gift, Beautiful Keepsake
After
Personalized Linen Recipe Book, Custom Name Cover
Why this is clearer: it names the item once, then leads with the material and the custom feature.
What moved out: broad gift phrases and the subjective word “beautiful.” Those can be addressed with context in the description if they are truthful and useful.
Before publishing, verify the cover material and personalisation method; the title should match the actual product.
Common mistakes to avoid
Treating the title like a keyword dump
A long chain of near-duplicate phrases is hard to scan. Keep one clear product name and use tags, attributes, and description for other relevant facts.
Leading with a vague gift phrase
“Gift for her” does not tell a buyer what is for sale. Lead with the item, then decide whether gifting language is relevant elsewhere.
Using subjective claims as descriptors
Words such as “perfect” and “beautiful” do not define the product. Replace them with a material, format, dimension, or construction fact.
Repeating the same word
If “candle” appears in multiple fragments, rewrite into one natural product phrase.
Practical template
Copy-and-edit title template
[Primary descriptor] [product noun], [material or format] [key differentiator] Example: Floral Weekly Planner, Printable PDF in A4 and US Letter
Use only details you can confirm. Aim for a short, readable phrase; Etsy’s April 2026 guidance suggests considering fewer than 15 words for the traits that make an item special.
