Description template

Etsy product description template: clear listing copy buyers can use

A product description turns the product facts behind a listing into a decision-ready explanation. Use this template to write a truthful first draft, then replace every placeholder with the details a buyer needs before checkout.

What this page is for

Use this template when you need to explain what the buyer receives, what it is made from, how it works, and what to expect. It has a different job from a title or tags: it gives context and reduces unanswered questions.

Etsy says its search considers descriptions alongside title, tags, attributes, photos, reviews, and more. Its Seller Handbook also recommends leading with a natural description of the item and making important details easy to find. The first sentence may be displayed in Google search results, so make it plain and accurate.

The buyer-first order

Open with the item and its main benefit or use. Follow with exact facts: materials, dimensions, what is included, personalisation steps, file specifications, condition, processing information, and care or use notes where relevant. Use short headings or bullets when they make details easier to scan.

For a digital item, state files, sizes, and licence scope. For a vintage item, state condition and flaws. For a personalised item, explain exactly what the buyer should submit and any character or proofing limits. Do not let a generic template fill gaps in your product knowledge.

  • First sentence: item + material/format + primary use.
  • Middle: what is included and the facts a buyer compares.
  • End: ordering, personalisation, processing, care, or licence details as applicable.

Edit before you publish

Read the draft as if you cannot see the photos. Can a buyer tell the size, material, variation, and what arrives? If an answer is only “maybe,” add the fact or remove the claim.

Descriptions can mention relevant search language naturally, but they are not a place for repeated keywords, promises of results, or invented urgency. Make policies, safety details, and rights accurate for your shop and product.

Worked example: personalised linen recipe book

This personalised linen recipe book keeps handwritten family recipes together in one place. The cover can be customised with a name, date, or short message.

Details: linen cover; recycled paper pages; made to order. Enter the requested personalisation exactly as you would like it printed. [Add the verified page count, dimensions, character limit, and current processing time here.]

A buyer can quickly see the item, the key material, the personalisation option, and the missing operational facts that must be confirmed before publishing.

Common mistakes to avoid

Opening with filler instead of the product

Start with what the item is. “Welcome to my shop” and broad gift claims can wait until after the buyer has the essentials.

Leaving important facts only in photos

Write dimensions, materials, condition, included items, and file details in the description so buyers can find them easily.

Using a template as a substitute for verification

Replace every placeholder. Never state a processing time, licence, safety claim, or material unless you can support it.

Repeating keywords unnaturally

Use relevant terms in normal sentences. Prioritise clarity and buyer questions over a repeated phrase.

Practical template

Copy-and-edit product description template

[Product name] is a [material / format] [product type] made for [primary use or buyer]. [One truthful distinguishing detail.]

WHAT YOU’LL RECEIVE
• [Included item / quantity]
• [Material, file format, or condition]
• [Exact size / dimensions]

DETAILS
[Explain how the item is made, used, or personalised. State only verified facts.]

ORDERING / DELIVERY
[Personalisation instructions, processing time, download details, or other essential next step.]

PLEASE NOTE
[Care, licence scope, variation, condition, or safety information that is relevant.]

Delete sections that do not apply. Add the verified facts that apply to your listing mode, and make sure the description matches photos, variations, policies, and the item itself.
