Tag planning guide
13 Etsy tags guide: build a varied, relevant tag set
Tags are a place to describe the same real product through different buyer-relevant phrases. This guide helps you plan all 13 without inventing demand, repeating the same term, or claiming live marketplace data.

What this page is for
Use this page when you have a product and need a complete, sensible set of 13 tags. It is not a list of universal “high-volume” phrases: the best phrases depend on the item, its category, and the language of your shop.
Etsy says each listing can use 13 tags, tags may be up to 20 characters, and multi-word phrases can be more useful than isolated words. Categories and attributes also supply context, so select the most specific accurate ones before filling every tag.
Plan tag coverage, not repetitions
Write a small bank of truthful product facts, then turn different facts into natural buyer phrases. A tag set can cover product type, material, style, use, recipient or occasion when genuinely relevant, format, size, and a synonym. Do not repeat a phrase simply because it sounds popular.
- Start with a specific category and complete all relevant attributes.
- Use the exact phrase that best identifies the item once, then add different angles a buyer could actually search.
- Keep every phrase relevant to the listing; unrelated traffic is not useful traffic.
- Check character counts in the listing editor before publishing.
A quick relevance check
For each proposed tag, ask whether a buyer who searched it would reasonably expect this exact product. If the answer is no, remove it. Then compare the 13 tags: if several say essentially the same thing, make room for an omitted, factual angle.
Review your own Shop Stats over time and test changes carefully. Etsy says results vary by shop and search changes, so no tag set can guarantee placement or sales.
Worked example: linen recipe book
Product facts: linen cover, personalised name, recipe journal, recycled paper pages, family recipes, wedding or housewarming use.
Possible 13-tag set: linen recipe book · recipe journal · custom cookbook · family recipe book · kitchen keepsake · recycled paper · home cook journal · bridal shower gift · wedding keepsake · personalized cover · handwritten recipes · cookbook organizer · kitchen notebook
Why it works: the tags are short phrases with different product facts and uses. Before using them, confirm every phrase is accurate and fits Etsy’s character limit.
Common mistakes to avoid
Using 13 versions of the same phrase
“Candle,” “soy candle,” and “handmade candle” may leave useful facts uncovered. Choose the best formulation, then add scent, vessel, occasion, or other truthful distinctions.
Ignoring categories and attributes
Choose the most specific category and relevant attributes first. Etsy says they act like tags and create additional matching context.
Adding another language without a shop-language plan
Etsy recommends titles and tags in the shop language and says it translates them for shoppers. Use your own translations only where you can accurately support them.
Chasing irrelevant occasions
A gift or holiday phrase should fit the actual item and buyer. Do not add it merely to widen the audience.

[occasion, if essential] 10. [synonym] 11. [construction / technique] 12. [supporting feature] 13. [another truthful buyer phrase]
Replace every bracket with a phrase a buyer could use for this exact item. Check the 20-character limit and remove duplicates before publishing.
